Instead of buying software and installing it on your
desktop computer, you can now access the same software over an
Internet connection. AppStream's patented streaming technology
splits desktop applications into small building blocks, and streams
these building blocks to user desktops on-demand. Initially, the
minimum number of segments required to start the application (the
"startup block") are streamed, enabling the user to start to use the
application in seconds, more quickly than if the entire app had to
be transferred first.
This means that an application can start working
locally in a few seconds, with only a small portion of the code base
initially resident, while the rest of the application is being
streamed in the background. What's more, when an application is
updated, the updated code - and only the updated code - is streamed
to the user, just like operating system patches.
